Obesity Action Coalition Pushes Ohio to Lift the Rule That Bars Medicaid Coverage of GLP-1 Drugs for Adult Obesity
Ohio Medicaid covers GLP-1 drugs for type 2 diabetes, heart risk reduction, sleep apnea, MASH, and obesity in patients under 18, but an exclusion in the state's administrative code blocks coverage for adult obesity, and the agency said it "cannot simply start covering these drugs under current policy," the Journal-News reported. Sarah Bramblette of the Obesity Action Coalition is pushing for a change, which would require formal rulemaking reviewed by the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review or new legislation. KFF counts 13 state Medicaid programs that covered the drugs for weight management as of early 2026.
