Sunday's papers mixed a drug already on the market with lab work. A post hoc pooled analysis of J&J's Phase 3 trials found that Icotyde, the oral IL-23 receptor-blocking peptide approved for psoriasis, also eased self-reported joint pain and disease activity in people who said they had psoriatic arthritis, an early signal ahead of the dedicated ICONIC-PsA trials. A Cleveland records study linked GLP-1 use in type 2 diabetes to fewer retinal artery and vein blockages, the opposite of the eye worries that NAION lawsuits have raised, though both kinds of evidence are observational. In the lab, a Shanghai team's AI model designed antimicrobial lipopeptides with a 96% hit rate, and a Macau group built a peptide depot that released an anticancer peptide in the acidic tissue left after breast tumor surgery in mice.

Pooled Phase 3 Analysis: Icotyde Improved Joint Pain and Nail Psoriasis in Psoriasis Patients With Self-Reported Psoriatic Arthritis

A post hoc pooled analysis of the Phase 3 ICONIC-LEAD, ICONIC-ADVANCE 1, and ICONIC-ADVANCE 2 trials, published October 18, 2026 in the Journal of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis, looked at 216 people with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who also reported having psoriatic arthritis (149 on Icotyde 200 mg daily, 67 on placebo). At week 16, 47.0% on Icotyde versus 10.7% on placebo reported at least 50% improvement in arthritis disease activity, 45.5% versus 16.1% in arthritis pain, and nail psoriasis scores improved 41.6% on Icotyde while worsening on placebo; side effect rates were similar. The arthritis diagnoses were self-reported and the p-values nominal; dedicated ICONIC-PsA trials are under way.

GLP-1 Users With Type 2 Diabetes Had Fewer Retinal Artery and Vein Blockages in a Cleveland Records Study

Researchers at Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Clinic's Cole Eye Institute reported in the Journal of VitreoRetinal Diseases on October 17, 2026 a records study of adults with type 2 diabetes and eye follow-up, matching GLP-1 users with users of other diabetes drugs (53,413 pairs at one year, 14,695 at five years). GLP-1 users had a lower risk of any retinal vascular occlusion, a blockage of the eye's blood vessels that can cause vision loss, at one year (hazard ratio 0.66), three years (0.71), and five years (0.79). The authors called for prospective trials, since the design cannot prove the drugs prevented the blockages.

Shanghai Team's AI Model Designs Antimicrobial Lipopeptides, With 44 of 46 Synthesized Candidates Killing Bacteria

Researchers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University reported in Nature Communications on October 17, 2026 a deep-learning model that designs antimicrobial lipopeptides, peptides with a fatty-acid tail, by accounting for how the tail changes activity. Starting from 2,657 bacterial peptide sequences mined from 96,911 genomes, the model screened 6,197 virtual lipopeptides; of 46 the team made, 44 killed bacteria, a 95.7% hit rate. The lead, LP630, worked against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and mycobacteria and treated infected wounds in mice.

Macau Team's pH-Triggered Depot Releases an Anticancer Peptide in the Tumor Bed After Breast Cancer Surgery in Mice

Researchers at the Macau University of Science and Technology, with a co-author from drugmaker Livzon, reported in Advanced Science on October 18, 2026 a lipid depot loaded with VDAP, an anticancer peptide derived from an HIV protein, that changes its internal structure and releases the peptide faster in the acidic tissue left after tumor removal. In mice with incompletely removed breast tumors, the depot killed remaining tumor cells in a way that alerted the immune system, increased tumor-fighting T cells, and reduced regrowth and lung metastases. The work is in mice.
