Editor's Note

Two Southeast Asian enforcement reports on the same day show where unapproved weight-loss injections are moving: Malaysia's health minister told Parliament that 12 raids had seized 697 units of retatrutide, a drug still in trials, and Thai customs stopped a traveler with 8,900 GLP-1 pens in two suitcases. Funded access is moving more slowly. A Pharmac advisory committee in New Zealand gave Wegovy a high priority for people with heart disease, but that is a provisional recommendation, not a funding decision, and Northwestern researchers found that 90.4% of U.S. teens who qualified for obesity surgery got neither surgery nor a GLP-1 drug by late 2025. The day's GLP-1 findings are mostly observational: a survey in which 44% of drinkers on the drugs said they drank less, and a not-yet-peer-reviewed comparison with metformin in prediabetes. Outside GLP-1 drugs, Washington State University won a grant to take Alphatide, a peptide that blocks sperm production in mice, toward human testing, and lab teams reported an insect peptide that partly restores antibiotic activity against an NDM-1 superbug enzyme and a phage-based cancer vaccine built around peptide antigens.

Malaysia's Health Minister Tells Parliament 12 Raids Seized 697 Units of Unregistered Retatrutide Worth RM341,000

Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad told the Dewan Rakyat that the ministry's Pharmacy Enforcement Division ran 12 raids against illegal retatrutide sales from 2025 to September 2026, seizing 697 units worth about RM341,000, plus 62 units of Ozempic and semaglutide worth RM64,170 in seven other actions, The Star reported. Retatrutide is not registered in Malaysia, and the minister said the ministry approved 240 applications for GLP-1 treatment from January to September at a cost of RM2.56 million.

Thai Customs Seizes 8,900 Unregistered GLP-1 Injection Pens From a Traveler's Suitcases at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Customs officers at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport found 8,900 weight-loss pens worth more than 5.34 million baht in two suitcases belonging to a Chinese man arriving from Bangladesh on October 31, The Thaiger reported. An airport customs officer said the pens contained GLP-1 injections, which are controlled in Thailand as a special-category drug, and the products were not registered with the Thai FDA; the report did not name the drug. In May, customs seized 137 packs of tirzepatide from another traveler on the same route.

Pharmac Committee Gives Wegovy High Funding Priority for New Zealanders With Heart Disease and a BMI of 27 or More

Pharmac's cardiovascular advisory committee provisionally recommended funding Wegovy (semaglutide) at high priority for people with cardiovascular disease and a BMI of 27 or more, RNZ reported. It is not a funding decision: Wegovy remains unfunded in New Zealand, where patients pay the full price, and Pharmac had already placed it on its list of medicines suitable for future funding for weight loss in May. Novo Nordisk welcomed the recommendation.

New Zealand Pharmacists Say Peptide Users Asking for Insulin Syringes Are Adding to Shortages

Wellington pharmacist Kelvin Lim of Hataitai Pharmacy told 1News that requests for diabetic syringes from people who said they inject peptides rose sharply over recent months, adding to shortages of syringes needed for insulin, and another Wellington pharmacist reported three to four such requests a week. Health New Zealand said its free peptide injecting kits, now handed out through needle exchanges and about 190 pharmacies, aim to ease pressure on supplies and do not mean it endorses unapproved peptides.

National Survey: 44% of Drinkers Who Started a GLP-1 Drug Said They Drank Less, Though Few Americans Knew of the Link

In a March-April 2026 RAND American Life Panel survey of 2,009 U.S. adults, 242 had been drinkers when they started a GLP-1 drug, and 44.2% of drinkers said they drank less afterward, rising to 54.1% among those who screened at risk for unhealthy drinking, the Harvard Gazette reported on the JAMA Psychiatry research letter. Only 10% of all respondents had heard the drugs might cut drinking. The authors note the survey relied on self-reports, did not measure how much drinking fell, and cannot show the drugs caused it.

Mayo Clinic Analysis of 256,492 Adults With Prediabetes Ties GLP-1 Drugs to 31% Lower Diabetes Risk Than Metformin

Among 256,492 adults with prediabetes and obesity in the TriNetX health-record network from 2010 to 2023, those prescribed a GLP-1 drug had a 31% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, 41% lower risk of death, and fewer heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure cases than matched patients on metformin over about three years, Mayo Clinic researchers reported in an abstract for the AHA's Scientific Sessions, November 6-9. The study is observational and not yet peer-reviewed, and the lead author called metformin still a first-line choice.

Nine in 10 U.S. Teens Who Qualified for Obesity Surgery Got Neither Surgery Nor a GLP-1 Drug by Late 2025, Northwestern Finds

Among more than 1.4 million U.S. adolescents in health records from 2017 to 2025 who met guideline criteria for metabolic and bariatric surgery, fewer than 1% had surgery and 4.6% received at least one GLP-1 prescription, Northwestern Medicine researchers reported in JAMA Pediatrics. GLP-1 prescribing rose about 35-fold, from 301 to 10,676 per 100,000 eligible teens, but by late 2025 90.4% had received neither treatment, and privately insured teens got GLP-1 prescriptions at 2.4 times the rate of uninsured or self-pay patients.

Bengaluru Case Report: Sodium Fell to 104 mmol/L 10 Days After a Woman Started Tirzepatide

A woman with type 2 diabetes and severe obesity who was also taking insulin and the diuretic torsemide developed loss of appetite, weakness, and drowsiness 10 days after starting tirzepatide, with a blood sodium of 104 mmol/L and lab results consistent with SIADH, a physician at Apollo Specialty Hospital in Bengaluru reported in the Indian Journal of Pharmacology. She improved with fluid restriction and hypertonic saline. A single case shows a timing association, not cause, and the author suggests checking electrolytes in patients with significant stomach symptoms or poor intake.

Washington State University Wins $274,849 to Move Alphatide, a Peptide Male Contraceptive, Toward Human Trials

WSU Regents Professor Jon Oatley's team designed Alphatide by testing more than 2,000 variants of a peptide that disrupts ARRDC5 and TEX38, two proteins found only in male reproductive tissue and needed for sperm production, and mouse studies showed a reversible contraceptive effect without apparent harm, WSU reported. A two-year Washington Research Foundation grant will pay for the final preclinical studies needed before the FDA can allow human testing, which Oatley estimates could start within three years.

Insect Peptide Thanatin Jams the NDM-1 Superbug Enzyme Without Stripping Its Zinc, NMR Study Shows

Using NMR spectroscopy, docking, and simulations, researchers reported in Communications Chemistry that the antimicrobial peptide thanatin binds beside the catalytic groove of NDM-1, an enzyme that lets bacteria destroy carbapenem antibiotics, and inhibits it by restricting a flexible loop while both zinc ions stay bound. In bacterial assays the effect partly restored carbapenem sensitivity, cutting viable cell output by 50% even with high enzyme levels. The work is lab-only.

MIT's Belcher Lab Packs More Peptide Antigen Onto M13 Phage Nanofibers, Making Cancer Vaccines Protect Mice Better

MIT Koch Institute researchers displayed tumor antigens on the coat protein of harmless M13 bacteriophage at densities from 6% to 70%, and mice given a 35%-density vaccine carrying the peptide SIINFEKL were much less likely to grow melanoma than mice given a 6% version, they reported in Advanced Healthcare Materials. A higher-density vaccine against the tumor neoantigen ADPGK also protected mice from colon tumors, and the phage DNA acted as its own adjuvant. The tests were preventive and in mice only.

Tianjin University's Copper-Peptide Nanozyme Gel Speeds Healing of Infected Diabetic Wounds in an Animal Model

Tianjin University researchers designed a peptide, C7-RD(S)HHEEH, that self-assembles with copper ions into a nanozyme mimicking four enzymes, including superoxide dismutase and peroxidase, and added it to a sprayable gelatin hydrogel, reporting in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. In a model of bacteria-infected diabetic wounds, the gel sped wound closure and increased new blood vessels and collagen deposition; there is no human data.
