Semax and Selank are two Russian-developed nootropic peptides with decades of domestic clinical use but no FDA approval. They are the most-researched peptides in the Russian nootropic tradition, manufactured by Peptogen Innovative NP and approved as OTC prescription medications in Russia (Semax since 1982, Selank since 2004).

Semax is a 7-amino-acid fragment of ACTH (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) used for cognitive enhancement, neuroprotection, and stroke recovery. In Russia it's prescribed at 0.1% strength for general cognitive use and 1% strength for post-stroke/post-surgical recovery.

Selank is a 7-amino-acid synthetic analog of tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) used for anxiolytic/nootropic effects — providing anxiolysis without sedation or benzodiazepine-like dependence. Onset is 15–30 minutes after nasal administration.

N-Acetyl Amidate variants — NASP (N-Acetyl Semax Amidate) and NASEL (N-Acetyl Selank Amidate) — add N-terminal acetylation and C-terminal amidation to resist enzymatic breakdown. Half-life extends 2–5x; effect duration goes from 2–4 hours (base) to 6–12 hours (amidate), allowing once or twice daily dosing instead of 2–3x daily.

Forms: Nasal spray is the standard delivery route (bypasses the blood-brain barrier via olfactory/trigeminal pathways). Injectable lyophilized powder also available for research.

Typical dosing:

• Semax: 200–600 mcg intranasal, 1–3x daily (600–900 mcg/day total)
• Selank: 200–400 mcg intranasal, 2–3x daily (600–1200 mcg/day)
• NASP/NASEL: Lower frequency due to extended half-life

Regulatory status (April 2026): NOT FDA-approved in the US. NOT a DEA controlled substance. NOT on the FDA 503A Category 1 bulk substances list — US compounding pharmacies offering them operate in a gray zone. Legal to buy and possess as research chemicals. Personal import of Russian pharmaceutical-grade product is permitted under FDA's 90-day supply rule. Insurance does not cover these peptides.
