GLP-1s in Schizophrenia, GLP-1 Drugs in Uveitis, a Peptide Cream for Radiation Skin Damage, Probiotic GLP-1

Danish data show GLP-1s cutting HbA1c and lipids in schizophrenia, uveitis stays stable on GLP-1s, and a peptide cream helps radiation-damaged skin.

Editor's Note

Saturday's papers tested GLP-1 drugs in patients the big trials rarely enroll. A Danish registry study of 3,042 people with schizophrenia found blood sugar, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides fell after they started a GLP-1 drug, matching what small randomized trials in this group had shown. At Stanford, 29 patients with uveitis and related eye inflammation mostly stayed stable on GLP-1 drugs and several cut back steroids, though the study cannot say the drugs caused that. Beyond GLP-1 drugs, a Korean trial in 30 patients found a cream containing the AIMP1-derived peptide NeoPep-S improved scars, pain, and itching after radiation for breast reconstruction, and a Brazilian team described a synthetic peptide that killed Candida tropicalis in four hours in the lab. A Beihang University team engineered gut bacteria that release GLP-1 when mice eat, and found that steady GLP-1 release instead favored gut bacteria carrying enzymes that break GLP-1 down.

Danish Registry Study of 3,042 People With Schizophrenia Finds HbA1c, LDL, and Triglycerides Fell After Starting a GLP-1 Drug

Aarhus University Hospital researchers reported in The British Journal of Psychiatry on October 23, 2026 an interrupted time-series analysis of Danish national registers from 1996 to 2023, identifying 3,042 people with schizophrenia who started a GLP-1 receptor agonist. When the drug was started for diabetes, HbA1c, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides fell by 11.4%, 6.2%, and 14.8%; when started for overweight, they fell by 3.4%, 4.9%, and 12.7%, all statistically significant. The authors used LDL and triglycerides as stand-ins for weight loss and say the results suggest benefits seen in randomized trials in schizophrenia extend to routine care; the design has no comparison group.

Stanford Review of 29 Patients With Uveitis and Related Eye Inflammation Finds Disease Mostly Stable and GLP-1 Drugs Well Tolerated

Researchers at Stanford's Byers Eye Institute reported in the Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection on October 24, 2026 a retrospective study of 49 eyes in 29 patients with noninfectious uveitis, scleritis, or retinal vasculitis who started a GLP-1 drug (semaglutide in 89.7%) for diabetes, obesity, or both. Nine eyes had active inflammation before treatment; active disease was seen in five of 43, five of 47, and one of 37 evaluable eyes at six months, one year, and three years, and nine of 14 patients on steroids tapered or stopped them over three years. Fifteen adverse events occurred in 11 patients, mostly stomach symptoms and worse blood sugar control, with one serious event; the authors say the design cannot show the drugs improved the eye disease.

Ajou University Trial: Cream With the AIMP1-Derived Peptide NeoPep-S Improved Scars, Pain, and Itching After Radiation for Breast Reconstruction

Plastic surgeons at Ajou University School of Medicine in South Korea reported in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery on October 24, 2026 a randomized, active-controlled trial in patients receiving radiation after mastectomy and breast reconstruction, comparing a cream containing NeoPep-S, a peptide derived from the protein AIMP1, with a standard barrier-repair moisturizer. Of 30 patients randomized 2:1, 23 completed the study (15 vs 8): skin water loss recovered similarly at one month, scar scores were significantly better with NeoPep-S at three months, pain was lower at both visits, and itching resolved completely in 100% versus 50%. The trial was small, and about a quarter of participants did not finish.

Brazilian Team's Synthetic Peptide FK18 Kills Candida tropicalis Within Four Hours and Works Synergistically With Fluconazole in the Lab

Researchers at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil reported in Probiotics and Antimicrobial Proteins on October 24, 2026 that FK18, a rationally designed cationic peptide, inhibited Candida and Cryptococcus species at 5 to more than 40 µM, and at 10 µM eliminated Candida tropicalis cells within four hours. It rapidly permeabilized fungal membranes, its activity fell four-fold when extra ergosterol was added, and checkerboard tests showed strong synergy with the antifungal fluconazole. NMR showed FK18 forms a stable amphipathic helix in membrane-like environments; all results are from lab tests and simulations.

Beihang University Engineers Gut Bacteria That Release GLP-1 at Mealtimes, Outperforming Constant Release in Obese Mice

Researchers at Beihang University in Beijing reported in Genome Medicine on October 24, 2026 genetically engineered probiotic bacteria that produce GLP-1 in response to diet, compared with bacteria that release it constantly, in a mouse model of obesity. Mealtime-triggered delivery reduced fat accumulation and fatty liver more than constant delivery. Constant delivery enriched gut bacteria carrying genes for GLP-1-degrading enzymes, which the team also found in clinical samples, while diet-triggered delivery kept those bacteria low; the therapy has been tested only in mice.
